Why use a Certified Practitioner?

The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA, http://www.bcia.org) is the only institute worldwide granting certification to biofeedback practitioners. BCIA was established in 1981 with the mission of protecting the general public by establishing strict standards for biofeedback practitioners. Currently, approximately 2,000 health care professionals have achieved this certification in general biofeedback, EEG biofeedback or both.

Certification demonstrates professionalism and adherence to carefully developed standards as a health care provider. Procedures are consistent with the Dept. of Health & Human Services Guidelines, giving credibility and evidence that your practitioner maintains knowledge and skill levels.

Health care practitioners who achieve BCIA Certification demonstrate commitment to professionalism by meeting:

  • basic degree and course work requirements
  • prescribed hours of clinical practice under qualified supervision
  • passing a rigorous certification examination testing knowledge of biofeedback

Practitioners are further required to be licensed in a health care field or to work under the supervision of a licensed health care provider. They must also agree to practice according to the Ethical Principles of BCIA and are subject to review and sanction by BCIA if they have not acted accordingly.
